Join the ServerThe palace must be under lockdown by now. Even for someone as capable as Yodel, forcing his way in would be difficult.
Moreover, doing so might provoke that kin-murdering beast, driving him to even crazier and more uncontrollable acts.
Soon, Yodel came up with an idea, inspired by his experience with Yelica!
The first time they met, her soul had been dragged straight into the Hall of Death because she peeked into his memories.
This showed that not only could Thanatos summon Yodel at any time, but under certain conditions, she could briefly summon others’ souls as well.
Yodel immediately sought out Thanatos to test this idea.
“You want to see Cecilia’s soul? That’s not hard. I can easily pull her here.”
“It actually works? You’re a lifesaver, boss!”
Yodel was overjoyed at first, but then another idea popped into his head.
“In that case, boss, can you also pull Frank’s soul over and put a death curse on him like you did with Yelica? Force him to abdicate to Cecilia?”
But Thanatos directly rejected the idea.
“You wish. I can’t just drag the souls of the living into the spirit realm. Only those I’ve specially marked can be summoned remotely.”
“Special mark? Did you leave something on Cecilia?”
“Uh… yeah.” Thanatos’s gaze drifted, making Yodel sense a hint of guilt.
That piqued Yodel’s curiosity. He probed, “What exactly did you leave?”
“Nothing much… Just a tiny death curse… Just as a marker, nothing else.”
Yodel kept staring at her.
“Okay, fine. I was actually worried she might go back on your deal, so I left you a safety net. See how thoughtful I am…”
Yodel blinked and continued staring.
“Sigh… All right, I admit. I was a little worried she might have ideas about you… Just a little worried.”
Yodel kept staring.
“Fine! Stop looking at me like that! I admit it—I’m especially wary of Cecilia. I’m afraid she’ll take you away from me.
“If I ever find myself losing to her, becoming the loser, I’ll flip the table with the curse! I’ll kill her!”
After yelling that, she felt relieved, but Yodel felt cold sweat on his forehead.
Oh no. It seemed the Death Goddess had unlocked some terrifying new trait…
As the saying goes, liking a yandere makes a good story, but being liked by one is a disaster.
And that yandere had a record of 1054967583… 0/0 floating above her head.
Yodel had to start struggling immediately!
“Ahem, boss… I mean, Thanatos, calm down. Have you forgotten our vow?”
“Of course I remember. We’ll be together for eternity. Why do you suddenly ask that?” Thanatos quickly responded.
“Think about it. Cecilia is a mortal. How long is her lifespan? A hundred years? Two hundred?
“Even if she lives a thousand years, she’ll eventually be defeated by death—by you. Even if she wins temporarily, you’ll have the last laugh, boss! We’re going to be together for eternity!
“So in theory, Thanatos, you could never become the loser.”
“Huh? When you put it that way… it kind of makes sense?” Thanatos tilted her head, half-understanding.
Yodel had used the longevity argument. It was super effective!
Seeing that his words were working, he decided to continue the bluff.
“That’s right. You’re thinking correctly now. The time Cecilia can stay by my side ultimately depends on you.
“If you allow her to accompany me, grant her immortality. If not, just wait a hundred years and she’ll die.
“She’s completely in your grasp. How could she possibly threaten you?”
The Death Goddess clapped her hands and jumped down from her throne. “Right! I’m a goddess, the immortal Death. How can a short-lived creature threaten me? Hmph, what’s a thousand years to me? Compared to eternity, it’s nothing.”
There, a few words and the treatment was complete. He’d successfully nipped the yandere tendency in the bud. As expected of him.
But Thanatos’s next words caught Yodel off guard.
“Speaking of Cecilia, aside from her relationship with you, I’m actually quite interested in her. Last time when I performed the resurrection, Cecilia looked right at me and didn’t run away scared.”
“Oh? Is there something special about her? Can she, like me, be immune to the fear of death?”
“No, not completely immune, but her fear of death is far lower than normal people’s. The reason is unknown.”
Hearing this, Yodel’s mind raced.
The fear of death in living beings could be reduced! If Yodel could find a way to eliminate that fear, maybe he could free the Death Goddess from being detested by the world!
He made a mental note to discuss this with Cecilia when he had the chance.
“Alright, we’ve wasted enough time. I’ll pull Cecilia over. I’ll step aside and let you two talk alone.”
“No need. You can listen in. There’s nothing I want to hide from you.” Yodel wanted to eliminate any possibility of misunderstanding, preventing Thanatos from relapsing into yandere behavior.
Thanatos waved her hand magnanimously. “No, I’d better hide. If I’m present, she’ll likely be affected by fear and won’t be able to communicate normally.”
With that, another familiar snap of her fingers, and the Death Goddess vanished. In an instant, Cecilia appeared before Yodel.
“Where is this?” Suddenly transported, Cecilia looked around in confusion.
“Hey? Yodel, why are you here? Did you bring me here?”
“To be precise, I brought your soul here. Your body should still be in the palace. If I’m guessing right, you’re under house arrest?”
“Unfortunately, you’re right.”
So that was it. Yodel confirmed his earlier suspicion and continued, “Can you tell me what happened in the palace after the prince’s assassination?”
Cecilia sighed helplessly.
“My movements are restricted, so the information I can get is very limited.”
“First, it seems Father fell ill from grief, but I think that’s just an excuse—he’s actually under house arrest like me.
“Second, Frank has become the de facto controller of Buckingham Palace, exercising the king’s authority.
“But it won’t be easy for him. Parliament and the royal family have never gotten along. They’ll surely use the fact that Father is still alive and Frank hasn’t been crowned to limit his actions, so he’s unlikely to gain full control.
“As for the state religion, until the truth of the assassination is uncovered, they probably won’t rashly support him as king.”
When Cecilia mentioned the assassination, Yodel fell silent for a moment, but ultimately decided to tell her the truth. After all, he couldn’t hide it forever.
“Cecilia, do you have any leads on who assassinated the prince?”
