The figures drew closer. Lin Yiting had no other choice but to temporarily entrust Lin Yi to Chen Sishi. She could only hope Chen Sishi wouldn’t do anything to her younger brother.
The surprise was too sudden; the unhealthy glint in Chen Sishi’s eyes vanished instantly. She flashed Lin Yiting a sweet smile, nodding obediently.
“Don’t worry, Sister, I’ll take good care of Lin Yi.”
Lin Yiting glanced at Chen Sishi, her eyes filled with a warning. Still uneasy about Lin Yi, she drew the dagger from her waist and tossed it to him.
“Protect yourself.”
With that instruction delivered, Lin Yiting raised her pistol and leaned out.
Seeing Lin Yiting’s attention fully focused on the bandits, a mischievous smile crept onto Chen Sishi’s face.
She cared nothing for the bandits or the innocent bystanders. A gunfight of this scale was nothing new to her; fear was a foreign concept.
In her eyes, only Lin Yi mattered. No matter how many people died, it had no bearing on Chen Sishi. Her sole concern now was to keep Lin Yi safe, cradled in her embrace.
The young girl’s soft body suddenly pressed against Lin Yi. At that moment, his nerves were still stretched taut.
Startled by Chen Sishi’s abrupt movement, Lin Yi’s body trembled, and he instinctively pulled away from her.
His mental state was already incredibly fragile; if Chen Sishi were to do anything further, Lin Yi feared he wouldn’t be able to bear it.
The light in Chen Sishi’s eyes dimmed slightly as she gazed at Lin Yi, bewildered. Her body continued to lean towards him, but with every step she took, Lin Yi retreated, until his back was firmly against the car door.
With nowhere left to go, he could only cast a pleading look towards Lin Yiting. However, Lin Yiting was currently engaged in a fierce firefight, completely unable to spare him a glance.
“Lin Yi, why are you backing away? I wasn’t going to hurt you.”
Chen Sishi’s figure loomed larger and larger in Lin Yi’s vision until the distance between them was less than half a meter, at which point she finally stopped.
Though the silver-haired girl was smiling, the expression on her lips grew increasingly rigid, like a broken doll. She saw all of Lin Yi’s movements, and each one pierced her heart.
She hadn’t meant to harm him, so why, in the end, was Lin Yi unwilling to even come near her?
The twisting and pulling inside her mind intensified, and Chen Sishi felt herself losing control.
Perhaps the gruesome sights of the day had pushed her further, for the madness on her face was more pronounced than ever before.
Lin Yi instinctively swallowed, already terrified. Chen Sishi’s actions only amplified his fear.
“Sister, let’s talk properly. In this situation, it’s better if we act normally.”
His words were automatically filtered out by Chen Sishi’s mind as she diverted her gaze to the bandits. Suddenly, comprehension dawned on her, and she grabbed Lin Yi’s cold hand.
“Oh~ I understand, Lin Yi. You’re scared of them, aren’t you?”
“You’re afraid of blood, right? I’ll take care of them right away, so Lin Yi won’t be scared anymore.”
The warmth of the girl’s palm transferred to Lin Yi. Under Chen Sishi’s influence, his already frantic emotions spiraled further into chaos.
Lin Yi truly felt an urge to cry. He was only in his twenties; how could he have ever experienced something so outrageous?
His current reaction was relatively composed; another person might have already wet their pants from fright.
Seeing Chen Sishi actually about to step out, despite his intense fear of her, and even wishing her dead, Lin Yi’s remaining shred of reason told him he couldn’t let her go.
If she left, and someone managed to sneak up, Lin Yi alone would be powerless to fight them off.
Moreover, it was his first time in such a situation, and his body was already paralyzed with terror.
Rather than staying there alone, trembling with fear, he thought it better to remain with Chen Sishi; at least he would have someone to rely on.
“I-I-I… I’m n-not s-scared, you-you-you… stay here… it’s dangerous.”
Barely managing to utter the words, Lin Yi slumped onto the asphalt.
His body felt increasingly cold, his blood seemingly frozen in his veins.
Piercing gunshots echoed intermittently in his ears, the dual torment of body and mind nearly driving him to madness.
Lin Yi’s vision gradually blurred. In a daze, he saw another person—a translucent figure standing directly before him.
Gazing at the person’s indistinct face, Lin Yi’s mind instantly cleared considerably. Yet when he looked again, the figure had vanished.
His consciousness had returned to normal, but his body continued to tremble uncontrollably. An icy chill, bone-deep, threatened to consume him whole.
Just then, two soft forms clasped his shoulders. The skin on his neck registered the tender touch of a girl’s delicate skin. His frigid body was instantly filled with warmth.
Lin Yi stared blankly at Chen Sishi. She was pressed so close to him that he could even detect the faint scent of her breath.
“No more fear, no more fear. Lin Yi shouldn’t be afraid of these things.”
Chen Sishi gently soothed Lin Yi, her slender fingers tracing patterns on his back.
An unnatural blush bloomed on her cheeks as Chen Sishi reveled in the physical contact, sensing Lin Yi’s body heat.
She found herself truly loving Lin Yi in this state, for in this moment, he desperately needed her.
With her nose pressed against the boy’s neck, inhaling his scent, Chen Sishi felt an overwhelming urge to pull him closer.
In that instant, her heart beat solely for Lin Yi.
“Lin Yi, my Lin Yi, forever and ever my Lin Yi, hehehe.”
A constant warm breath caressed his neck, and even under these circumstances, Lin Yi’s body began to react.
However, he had no time to dwell on such things; his immediate priority was to escape this place.
Thanks to Chen Sishi, Lin Yi felt his body grow less cold, and his frantic emotions gradually settled.
Meanwhile, Lin Yiting expertly peered around the corner of the car. Her neat, high ponytail swayed in the wind, and her face bore a grave expression. With each gunshot, spent casings ejected into the air.
Her marksmanship was incredibly precise, almost to the point of one bullet incapacitating one enemy. She specifically targeted non-fatal areas that would still render opponents immobile.
This strategy allowed them to preserve lives while buying crucial time.
Additionally, two other pistol shots of the same caliber rang out nearby, likely from the driver and Chen Lujun.
The group of bandits was caught somewhat off guard by the assault from this side. They had assumed Chen Lujun wouldn’t carry a gun on this outing.
The previous inaction of Chen Lujun and his companions had seemingly confirmed this assumption.
However, they hadn’t anticipated that Chen Lujun’s people would lie in wait, only revealing themselves to engage after the bandits had already expended considerable effort.
A surge of anger building in his chest, the leading middle-aged man gestured to a few others, urging them to press forward.
One of the burly middle-aged men raised his gaze, and in his line of sight, a strikingly beautiful woman appeared. Seeing the gun in her hand, his first instinct was to lift his own weapon and pull the trigger.
With a resounding bang, a splash of crimson scattered through the air. The vivid red blood pierced Lin Yi’s heart like an arrow.
In that moment, the air itself seemed to freeze. Lin Yi’s eyes widened, and he cried out instinctively.
“Sister!”
