Chapter 8 (Part 1) • 1,417 words • 12 min read

Old Hou was Ren Anhua’s affectionate nickname for her high school friend, Hou Hanliang, who ran a barbecue restaurant.

After entering the workforce, the two ran into each other at a roadside barbecue stall after work, and hit it off immediately.

After that, evening beer and barbecue became Ren Anhua’s favorite pastime and the greatest relaxation outside of work.

When the apocalypse broke out, Ren Anhua happened to be drinking beer with his colleague, Zhao Sanyan, at Boss Huang’s barbecue stall.

And that’s how the two of them, plus Old Hou and Hou Yingying, Old Hou’s daughter who helped at the barbecue restaurant, formed the original apocalypse survival team.

The four supported each other and got through the most dangerous period at the start of the apocalypse.

Led by the strongest, Ren Anhua, they gradually grew in strength, rescuing many people and killing many others.

However, after entering the military base, Old Hou left the group.

He said he still had a daughter to raise and it wasn’t really suitable for him to go out fighting.

Returning to his roots, he opened a barbecue stall again.

Boss Hou had decent skills, and his business was doing well.

There were many bandits in the apocalypse, but under the deterrent of Ren Anhua’s infamous reputation, no one dared to cause trouble for Old Hou’s barbecue restaurant.

Any petty thugs who dared to come to collect protection money from the barbecue restaurant were turned into barbecue by Ren Anhua, so even though the barbecue restaurant had a rather pretty girl, no one dared to lay a hand on her.

Although Ren Anhua later left the base, his prestige remained, and he had also entrusted his colleague Zhao Sanyan to look after Old Hou.

He didn’t know how the business had been doing since then.

Zhao Sanyan was an Awakened with decent strength, while Old Hou and his daughter were both ordinary people.

Four o’clock in the afternoon was exactly when Old Hou’s barbecue restaurant opened for business.

Ren Anhua went over to take a look, and the business was quite good.

In the apocalypse, if you wanted to satisfy your appetite, barbecue was the best choice for ordinary people.

Wearing her sukumizu, Ren Anhua went straight to an empty seat near the entrance.

Although she received many strange looks from the people around her, Ren Anhua had pretty much gotten used to it.

‘Let them look,’ she thought. ‘What could these small fries do to me?’

With this mentality, Ren Anhua contentedly ordered a few skewers of grilled meat, preparing to savor the taste of the past.

Hou Hanliang was quite surprised to see this sukumizu girl walk into his restaurant.

A skintight sukumizu had no place to put anything.

He wondered if she had brought any crystal cores to pay with.

Ren Anhua, however, had been a bit negligent about this.

Since the apocalypse, her subordinates had been taking care of these trivial matters.

Unaware of her own problem, Ren Anhua happily ate her barbecue.

The only regret was that this place didn’t have any beer.

In the apocalypse, alcohol and tobacco were very high-end luxury items, since the production sources were gone.

Only some of the upper echelons and Awakened who went out to gather supplies still enjoyed these things.

For example, the original Ren Anhua never let go of his cigarettes or beer.

But the current Ren Anhua didn’t care too much about these things.

The joy of eating barbecue brought back a familiar feeling from the past, and she was in a good mood.

She didn’t really mind the lack of beer.

The barbecue restaurant was bustling with people coming and going, making it a good place to gather information.

People loudly discussed all kinds of news they knew, using this to gain the pleasure of being noticed.

“Did you guys hear about that gang called the Survivor Camp in the East Suburbs?

Don’t know about it?

Then you must know Ren Anhua, right?

He’s the leader of that gang.”

A man who looked like he went out to make a living was drinking homemade liquor and speaking in a drunken slur.

Ren Anhua strongly objected to others calling her camp a gang.

She thought she hadn’t done anything that gangsters did, except for murder and arson.

Why did these people always think she was a gang leader?

“I’m telling you, that Ren Anhua was killed yesterday.”

The drunk suddenly lowered his voice, revealing a very shocking piece of news.

But even if he lowered his voice, his loud mouth made sure everyone around him heard it clearly.

“Ah, really?

Ren Anhua could die?”

The surrounding listeners seemed quite surprised.

Seeming very satisfied with his explosive news, the drunk continued to speak loudly.

“Of course it’s true.

Yesterday, the camp’s second-in-command led a bunch of underlings and stormed the Yellow Banner Gang.

It was a tragic battle, with heavy casualties on both sides.

We thought the camp wouldn’t be much of a threat without Ren Anhua, but we didn’t expect that second-in-command to actually have some skills.

The camp has already wiped out the Yellow Banner Gang.”

The drunk paused.

“A kid who escaped from the Yellow Banner Gang told me this when I went out yesterday.

He also said that the second-in-command kept shouting for them to hand over the person who killed his boss, but how could the Yellow Banner Gang have the ability to kill Ren Anhua?

It’s so funny.”

“Then who killed Ren Anhua?

Could it be that he’s not actually dead and it’s just an excuse to wipe out the Yellow Banner Gang?”

“Who knows who killed him, but their second-in-command can’t curse his own boss to death, right?

Besides, if Ren Anhua wanted to wipe out someone, he wouldn’t need an excuse.

Why would he let his own subordinates go out and die like that?

If he personally took action, there wouldn’t be so many deaths.

Ah, you don’t know, it was a bloody mess back then….”

The drunk spoke as if he had experienced it firsthand, vividly describing the scene, but Ren Anhua was no longer in the mood to listen.

She was now extremely anxious and just wanted to go back immediately to stabilize the situation.

She didn’t expect that after she disappeared, Meng Fanhai would do something so irrational and actually lead people to storm Hao Yu’s territory.

As she was feeling agitated, she heard a loud bang of a table being slapped.

“What the hell is this?

Does your barbecue come with cockroaches?”

A blonde-haired man slapped the table, nearly overturning it, and shouted loudly while pointing at the two cockroaches in the iron plate.

All eyes in the restaurant immediately turned to the blonde-haired man.

Hou Yingying, who was carrying a plate, hurriedly went over, wanting to handle the situation, but looking at the two cockroaches on the plate that had been stepped on half to death, she didn’t know what to say.

Cockroaches in the plate—such a cliché excuse.

The clean-eaten barbecue sticks were scattered haphazardly to the side, almost making it clear that this was a set-up.

These people had clearly finished eating the barbecue, then casually stepped on two cockroaches and put them on the plate to cause trouble.

If it was just about trying to avoid paying, it could still be handled, but she feared the other party wanted to do more than just that.

“Well, in that case, then this meal can be free, how about that?”

Facing the aggressive blonde-haired man, Hou Yingying was a little scared.

This was her first time encountering such a situation.

In the past, she always had Big Brother Anhua’s protection, and such things never fell to her to handle.

But since yesterday, news had been circulating that Big Brother Anhua was dead, and all kinds of filthy characters had been showing a eager attitude.

Now, it seemed they had confirmed the news and finally come to her restaurant to cause trouble.

She certainly didn’t believe Big Brother Anhua would die, but facing this situation, she was at a loss.

“Free?

I came here to eat barbecue, and you give me cockroaches to eat.

Is this something that can be resolved with just ‘free’?”

The blonde-haired man looked down at the girl in front of him and poked her full chest with his finger, saying each word clearly.

“You!

Have!

To!

Pay!

Money!”

Hou Hanliang noticed the situation and hurried over.
