After much persuasion, the student finally returned to his seat. Huang Xiu, meanwhile, sought out an undisturbed corner, leaning against the wall as she settled down.
Even though she had completed her own test, she was forbidden from leaving, compelled to wait until every other candidate had finished.
This waiting period was, without a doubt, pure torment.
There were no phones, no books, not even a familiar friend nearby for conversation.
Bored beyond measure, Huang Xiu resorted to teasing Huang Xiaoxian, much like one might tease a cat.
Groups of candidates entered and emerged, and with each cycle, another empty row on the leaderboard was filled. Occasionally, a candidate with an impressive score would elicit gasps of surprise from the onlookers.
And so, amidst these exclamations, time imperceptibly slipped away.
At four in the afternoon, the final group of candidates completed their tests. As their figures emerged from the channel, the colossal, 299-line leaderboard for the re-evaluation was finally complete.
This signaled that the re-evaluation was, at last, drawing to a close. Realizing this, everyone collectively exhaled, suddenly feeling utterly drained.
The exceptionally challenging assessment tasks, the constantly shifting re-evaluation rankings… this day-long ordeal had been an undeniable double torment, both mentally and physically.
“All candidates have completed assessment items one and two. Assessment item three will now officially commence,” a voice announced, drifting calmly from the loudspeakers.
“What?! There’s a third item?!”
“No way!”
Cries of dismay and gasps of shock rippled through the crowd; they had never imagined this ordeal was still far from over.
So… what *was* assessment item three?
Everyone craned their necks, eagerly awaiting an answer, while Huang Xiu already harbored a faint suspicion.
The broadcast room then provided the clarification everyone sought: “Assessment item three: Combat. All candidates may challenge another candidate of the same specialization whose rank is higher than their own. Each candidate has only one opportunity to challenge and one opportunity to be challenged. Please use this wisely.”
“Reminder: This assessment will not directly affect the scores or rankings of either the challenger or the challenged. All candidates are free to decide whether to participate.”
All candidates were free to decide whether to participate.
“What kind of octagon deathmatch is this?” someone exclaimed, instantly startled.
Despite the final reminder from the broadcast, no one was naive enough to believe this assessment would be without consequence. ‘Will not directly affect’ surely implied there would be indirect repercussions. Low-ranked candidates who performed exceptionally well might even be able to seize this opportunity in item three to defy fate and garner interest from more institutions.
‘So this is where the challenge Teacher Yue spoke of was waiting for me,’ the young woman thought, rising to her feet. She felt a surge of excitement, a thrill, but not a trace of fear. Just as she had told her teacher and senior student before coming, she was in a league of her own. There was no reason for her to lose.
The enormous leaderboard displayed on the opposite wall suddenly underwent another transformation. Starting from the very bottom, everyone’s ranking and candidate number colors began to change in sequence. They shifted from black to red, blue, and green.
“What is this?” someone wondered aloud, but they quickly noticed a small line of text had appeared on the leaderboard.
“Different colors represent different specializations: red signifies Attack, blue signifies Crowd Control, and green signifies Support,” Huang Xiu murmured the words, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. If three colors represented three specializations, then what color would her ‘all-rounder’ status be?
Driven by curiosity, her gaze ascended the leaderboard, following the changing colors of each name. With the completion of the tests, Chi Xue had long since been pushed down to the seventh position. At this point, the top seven candidates were all Awakened individuals of at least Rank B, though Huang Xiu recognized only two of them.
These were Bai Baibai and Liu Lu.
Bai Baibai, Desired Affiliations: Jurisdiction Bureau, Tiandu University, National Awakened Higher Vocational College.
Liu Lu, Desired Affiliations: Jurisdiction Bureau, Tiandu University, National Awakened Higher Vocational College.
Their respective colors were blue, representing Crowd Control, and red, representing Attack. Next was another candidate, who also turned red, and then it was Huang Xiu’s turn. Under her eager gaze, her candidate number and associated text slowly transformed into a brilliant gold. Upon closer inspection, faint hues of red, green, and blue shimmered within the golden letters and numbers. Dignified, elegant—this was the universal impression.
“Assessment item three, officially commencing!”

The moment the broadcast echoed, two figures instantly materialized before Huang Xiu.
“I challenge you!”
Li Xiushen and Liu Lu declared in unison, seemingly having prepared for this, waiting patiently by the sidelines.
“Uh…”
The young woman froze for half a second, unsure how to proceed.
“Perhaps you two could discuss it privately first and decide who goes?” she suggested tentatively. She could only accept one challenge, and being an all-rounder, she didn’t even have the right to initiate a challenge herself.
“No need to deliberate, it’ll be me!” Li Xiushen declared, stepping forward with his chest puffed out.
“I’m a Rank B Awakened, shouldn’t you choose me?”
“Damn it!”
Liu Lu gnashed her teeth in frustration at Li Xiushen’s arrogance. She glared at Huang Xiu fiercely. “I was here first, and we already agreed!”
“How about this, then… why don’t both of you come at me?” Huang Xiu pondered for a long while before finally devising a perfectly ‘fair’ solution. However, this suggestion seemed to infuriate the two individuals before her.
“Are you insulting me?” The anger in Li Xiushen’s eyes was undisguised.
*Crunch, crunch, crunch…* Liu Lu’s fists clenched tightly.
“What I mean is, both of you challenge me, but one goes first, and then the other,” Huang Xiu explained earnestly. “My Void Energy is far more abundant than yours; a ‘relay battle’ won’t affect me.”
‘If you still object, then allow me to choose the battlefield for assessment item three!’ the young woman added, a hint of mischievousness in her tone.
Given the rules’ restrictions, there seemed to be no better alternative. Liu Lu and Li Xiushen exchanged glances, then nodded.
Seeing this, a slight curve appeared at the corner of Huang Xiu’s lips. ‘Plan accomplished! These two are so naive, even easier to trick than Shi Lei!’
“Examiner, is this allowed? For me to accept a challenge from both of them at once?” Huang Xiu called out, tilting her head back.
No broadcast responded, but a green guiding line suddenly appeared at the feet of the three individuals. This signified tacit approval.

In the main control room, Yuan Fei, lounging with one leg crossed over the other, watched the scene unfold and suddenly burst into a scoffing laugh. He slapped the armrest of his chair vigorously, his laughter growing louder.
“Your chosen seedlings are in for a rough time!”
“That remains to be seen,” replied Qu Zuiliu, the woman in the red qipao, licking her crimson lips.
“Utterly foolish!” Conquest Bureau Chief Examiner Cheng Yangping cursed, crossing his arms, exasperated. For an Awakened individual, a suitable combat environment often acts as a powerful catalyst.
“The little lass certainly has her schemes,” Yan Wenmao remarked, a flicker of amusement in his eyes.
Meanwhile, Huang Xiu and the two others followed the green line, arriving at the previous testing ground.
“Candidate 122, which testing ground do you choose? Any type of environment can be generated.”
A flat, mechanical voice suddenly spoke, yet Huang Xiu distinctly detected a hint of barely suppressed amusement hidden within its tone.
“Any type is available?” Huang Xiu hadn’t anticipated such a pleasant surprise.
“I choose…” She threw her hands up, laughing loudly:
“A primeval jungle!”
