“What are you doing?”
The young lady’s face darkened, her tone laced with bone-chilling frost.
“Young lady, I…”
She gave me no chance to respond.
“What are we doing… We’re friends, just wanting to share a little secret with her! Something like this is perfectly normal between friends, right? Right, Miss Ailena!”
As she spoke, she grabbed my hand once more.
“…It’s true that I’m friends with Sophina, but you and I are complete strangers!”
Smack!
This time, an even louder slap rang out, drawing every gaze in the vicinity.
“Hey, hey… look over there…”
“That blonde one… isn’t she the duke’s daughter?”
“Isn’t the pink-haired one that special admission student with the rare attribute?”
“Did the pink-haired girl just get hit?”
“I saw the whole thing… That’s the second time she’s done it.”
“Oh…”
“Eh… no way…”
“I thought she was a good person since she funded the boys’ dorm repairs, but now I might have to change my opinion…”
The tide of opinion seemed to be turning against us…
Yet the young lady paid no heed to the surrounding whispers and cold remarks, continuing icily:
“Who permitted you to touch Ailena’s hand?”
The slapped girl clutched her reddened hand, whining pitifully:
“Isn’t it normal for friends to hold hands? Do I need to apply to the ducal lady just to touch Miss Ailena’s hand?”
“Exactly. Ailena is mine. If you want to touch her, you naturally need my permission… I let it slide before, but now I have no intention of tolerating you.”
At those words, a fleeting smile seemed to cross “Sophina’s” face.
She puffed up her cheeks, indignantly declaring:
“Miss Ailena is not an object! She’s a living, breathing human! She has her own will! I won’t hand the kind Miss Ailena over to a villain like you!”
The young lady’s eye twitched.
“You…”
“Sophina! Are you okay?!”
Just as the young lady was about to erupt, several male leads rushed to Sophina’s side.
“Your hand…”
“Did you do this?!”
One of them, the orange-haired boy, glared at the young lady as if to intimidate her.
But the young lady crossed her arms, unflinching:
“So what if I did? Who told her to casually touch my family’s maid?”
“It was just holding hands! Did you have to hit her?”
“I merely swatted away the filth that landed on my family’s maid. What’s wrong with that?”
“You…!”
“What’s going on? Why is everyone gathered here?”
The commotion had grown too large, even drawing a teacher over.
“Tch…!”
Seeing the teacher arrive, the male leads stopped pressing the issue and left with Sophina.
“Miss Ailena, since you helped me, I’ll definitely help you too! At the very least, I’ll make sure you’re treated like a human!”
Before departing, she didn’t forget to toss out that line.
“…The young lady absolutely does not treat me as less than human! She values me greatly!”
My pale explanation—did it even reach her ears?
Setting “Sophina” aside for now… I at least hoped the others might change their views!
Rustle, rustle…
But judging by the surrounding whispers, they hadn’t listened at all.
“What are you staring at? Get back to class! The first period is about to start!”
The teacher began dispersing the onlookers.
“Let’s go too, Ailena.”
“Oh…”
The young lady seemed utterly unconcerned by the incident, taking my hand and hurrying toward the classroom.
After that commotion, “Sophina” began approaching me deliberately…
…
And every time, it was when the young lady was present.
Inevitably, the two would clash…
If it were just private arguments, that might be fine, but every time it was in public…
One side was the imposing young lady with a prior record of violence; the other, a pitiful commoner girl backed by other males.
To the crowd, which side to support was obvious.
I tried speaking up for the young lady, but no matter the explanation, “Sophina” would shut me down with a single: “You’re just being coerced, aren’t you?”
With that one sentence, she rendered my defense powerless…
…
Rumors of the young lady’s misdeeds gradually spread among the students.
By the second conflict, I had already roughly figured out “Sophina’s” goal…
—She must be trying to push the young lady back into the role of the villainess, right?
But I was powerless to stop it… With just my strength alone, there was no way to shift public opinion.
From the moment she bumped into me, it was probably the start of my defeat.
…
If only I had realized her intentions sooner…!
A wave of helplessness and regret surged through me…
“Ailena, are you alright?”
Warmth transmitted through our joined hands.
Beside me was the golden-haired girl, her expression filled with concern.
“I… I’m fine.”
Come to think of it, we were on our way to the student council room…
“Is that so? Don’t push yourself, okay.”
“Mhm… I won’t.”
The young lady’s demeanor was no different from usual… She couldn’t possibly be unaware of the recent rumors.
Such an open-minded attitude was truly admirable…
But that mindset held little meaning for the current situation.
“Little Katarina…”
The moment we entered the room, even Olivia, who had been assigning us tasks, faced us with a troubled expression.
“Your reputation… it’s really not looking good, you know?”
“I didn’t do anything wrong. She’s the one who started it.”
“That may be true for you… but others don’t see it that way. And the surrounding evaluations will affect the emperor’s assessment, you know.”
…
The young lady fell silent.
For her, the emperor’s favor was essential. Without his approval, she couldn’t achieve her grand ambitions.
And for “Sophina,” it was the same… That’s why she schemed to frame the young lady.
“Whatever… let’s set that aside for now.”
Olivia forced a smile back onto her face.
“Today’s request is an on-campus one.”
“On-campus request?”
It must be novel for the young lady, since she’d always been handling external monster subjugation tasks.
But such requests were quite common in the game’s early stages for building reputation—about three out of five, basically just helping other students with miscellaneous chores.
In fact, the details were much as I expected.
“You know our school has a particularly large library, right? Some students borrowed books and haven’t returned them past the due date, making excuses and causing headaches for the student librarians… So they requested the student council’s help. As for the specifics, just ask the librarian!”
…
“Wow…”
Pushing open the door, what greeted our eyes were countless massive bookshelves, crammed full of books, filling the room with the scent of paper; paired with the elegant design style, the entire library exuded an ancient, refined charm that lifted the spirits.
As expected of a national academy’s architecture—whether the chapel or the library, everything was impressively grand.
We looked around curiously as we approached the library’s front desk.
“Hello, we’re from the student council… Hm?”
…Yet we found the front desk completely unmanned.
