The drooping yellow petals reminded me of your hair

Chapter 91 • 1,629 words • 14 min read

“You already received the Wellington & Sons catalog.”
As Selene, who had returned to the mansion after parting with Logan, placed the brochure she had brought on the side table in the entrance hall, Gwendolyn smiled brightly, taking her parasol.
“Yes, Logan brought it.”
“I was so surprised when I heard that Pembroke was acquiring the piano manufacturer, Wellington & Sons.”
“Because it’s a promising company that anyone would be interested in.”
“That’s true, but considering Pembroke’s past actions, which were far from artistic, it is a bit surprising.”
Although Gwendolyn looked at her with a meaningful smile, Selene, who was tired after meeting Logan, did not notice.
“It must have been hot. Would you like to take a bath right away?”
Gwendolyn, who had immediately noticed Selene’s condition from her lukewarm reaction, asked.
Selene, if she had her way, would have wanted to soak herself in lukewarm water and wash away the fatigue of the day, just as Gwendolyn had suggested.
But it would be better to quickly get rid of the unpleasant task she had taken on today.
“Theron hasn’t sent any letters today, has he?”
“No. It seems he’s busy.”
Gwendolyn tried to make an excuse for the lack of letters.
Selene, who knew why Theron wasn’t sending letters anyway, nodded and made a request.
“Just bring a sheet of stationery to my bedroom.”
If Theron had sent a letter of apology first today, she thought a greeting to start her reply would naturally flow, so she had checked with Gwendolyn.
Because the greetings to be written in a reply were somewhat fixed.
On the other hand, it was really difficult to write the first line on a blank sheet of paper.
Especially for Selene, who had rarely sent a letter to anyone in her life.
Even if she did send a letter, it was usually just the main point.
But the reason she couldn’t send it like that now was because Theron was very angry when she had last seen him.
And she had to ask such a person if he would be interested in being introduced to Logan Pembroke.
Although Selene was insensitive and indifferent to the feelings of others, it was an awkward task.
She could already picture how furiously angry Theron would be when he received this letter.
So, for once, Selene thought of starting her greeting in a way that was not like her.
A little sentimental and soft.

[To Theron Cox.
Today, seeing the withered leaves from the heat, I thought of you. The drooping yellow petals reminded me of your hair.]

But after writing just one line, Selene stopped her pen.
If she mentioned the withered leaves, Theron might notice that his secretary had badmouthed him.
And the word ‘drooping’ gave a negative feeling.
Selene, who was staring at the first line she had written, finally crumpled the stationery.
Selene, who had spread out a new, clean sheet of stationery, decided to be a little more careful.
She couldn’t just keep crumpling up the stationery because she didn’t like the sentences.
But contrary to her resolve, Selene continued to throw away the stationery after that.
‘Seeing the puddle of water on the street, your blue eyes… no.’
‘The shape of the cumulonimbus cloud I happened to see today resembled your broad, thick chest… no.’
As she wasted time on the unsatisfactory opening of the letter, the sun outside was setting.
Selene, who foresaw that she would be staying at her desk all night without even filling half of the stationery at this rate, finally changed her mind.
She decided to give up on the sentimental and soft greeting that didn’t even come to mind and just honestly state the situation, adding a little of her current feelings.
As she made up her mind, her pen moved smoothly.
The sound of the pen nib scratching on the paper was heard for a while.

Theron thought he had controlled himself very well for the past few days.
He had put aside the past where he had been swayed by Selene’s single word and had now found his footing.
It was evident from the way he had concentrated on his company’s work and had handled things quite neatly, even after returning from his fight with Selene at the art museum.
Of course, it wasn’t that he had gotten better by just staying still.
He had found his own solution.
The most serious symptom when he didn’t contact Selene was that he missed her like crazy.
As a side effect, Selene would flicker before his eyes, or he would be tormented by nightmares of Selene leaving.
So, Theron had found a substitute for Selene to soothe this feeling of missing her.
It was a rose.
Although it had no resemblance to Selene, strangely, his heart would often pound when he looked at a rose, and the symptom was similar to when he saw her.
It was a forced connection that was embarrassing to even call a common point, but the single rose he had placed where he could see it when he lifted his head was a strange comfort.
“If it weren’t for that bastard, Logan Pembroke, I wouldn’t have any reason to be comforted by something like this.”
Nevertheless, the anger towards Logan Pembroke that would often well up would escape his mouth uncontrollably.
In this way, Theron was not in perfect control of himself.
Just thinking of the name Logan Pembroke made his insides feel stuffy and made him feel like he wanted to rip off the tie that was strangling his neck, so his inner peace was still unstable.
Sometimes, that flickering anger would even extend to Selene.
Even without seeing it, he knew that bastard was loitering around Selene, pretending to be a childhood friend, so why on earth was she the only one who didn’t know?
‘In the first place, what kind of crazy man follows a friend to study abroad for five years?’
It was obviously a dark, dirty trick.
Besides, Logan Pembroke had even been Selene’s ex-fiancé.
It was clear that Selene, who was clueless, had unilaterally demanded a breakup, saying they were just friends.
And Logan whatever-his-name-was had to accept it to maintain even an ambiguous friendship.
It was highly probable that the reason Selene had become so nonchalant was because there had been so many men who liked her around her since she was a child that she had gotten her feet wet.
When you’re exposed to something often, you get used to it and even become numb.
Still, it wasn’t that Selene was completely without fault.
Her ex-fiancé had returned to the country, yet she hadn’t said a single word to him, and they were even going to study abroad together in that distant place.
Theron felt as if his insides were on fire just by imagining it.
This fire would probably not be extinguished even if he went into a frozen lake on a winter day.
But what was even more annoying was his own situation, where he could do nothing even in this state.
An irreversible past, the damn mistake his past self had made.
So, on the evening he had returned after getting angry at Selene, even while wondering if it was okay to do this, that day, he had felt a particularly strong resentment.
‘Why? Can’t I be like this?’
‘How much have I done for Selene so far?’
‘Looking back, the reason he had tried so hard was not just to win Selene’s favor.’
‘Because at some point, he had genuinely come to like her and had acted as if he would give her his all.’
‘The fact that he could go to jail for Selene, and that he didn’t care even if Selene was a monster with a hairy face, proved that his feelings were unchangingly sincere.’
So, Theron had been repeating the cycle of being at peace inwardly, then suddenly resenting Selene, and then losing his strength.
At that sight, Gary had a seriously contemplating expression, but he didn’t care because he knew he wouldn’t be able to hand in his resignation even if he had written it.
Since he was the type to feel comfortable with familiar things, Gary would not easily give up his old job.
One day, as he was repeating his bipolar-like behavior, a letter arrived for Theron.
Selene Ashcombe.
His heart immediately started to pound at that name.
Theron cleared his throat first.
He felt he had to, even though no one was talking to him.
Theron, who had calmly torn open the envelope, checked the letter.

[To Theron.]

He had only seen his name written at the top, but Theron’s heart pounded even more fiercely.
As if Selene were whispering his name in his ear.
Just this name, written on the white stationery, was enough to somewhat appease the anger he had felt because of Logan Pembroke.

[I’m not very good with words, so I’ll just get to the point. The matter with Logan is a clear misunderstanding on your part, and I hope you will clear it up.
So, I was thinking, how about I introduce you to Logan? It will probably feel different to see him in person than just hearing about him.
Let me know if you’re willing to meet Logan if I arrange a meeting. I’ll be waiting for your reply.
-From Selene Ashcombe.]

Although he hadn’t had high expectations, Selene’s letter was as dull and dry as a public document.
It looked as if she had spent the whole day contemplating how to convey her message with the fewest words.
And yet, Theron could not take his eyes off the letter.
Setting aside the content, the words ‘I’ll be waiting’ made Theron’s heart pound painfully.
