Although it was possible to use a teleportation scroll to return to town directly, Yan, cherishing the rare journey, decided to walk back, treating it as an opportunity to admire the magnificent scenery of the Companion God Realm.
“Even familiar landscapes, when viewed with different companions, transform into beautiful and unique vistas.”
Walking back towards Windstar City, Yan’s lips curved into a slight smile as he glanced at Alice beside him, speaking thus.
“Even you, who are so intimately familiar with this game, couldn’t have predicted that players would host a wedding on this particular map, could you?”
“Hmph, I knew it long before we arrived.”
Alice retorted, a hint of displeasure in her voice.
“Eh?”
Yan looked at her, puzzled.
Sensing his astonished gaze, Alice’s lips curved into a slight, triumphant smile.
“Every player has an ‘Alice’ by their side, you know?”
Her beautiful long hair, caught by the gentle breeze winding through the valley, softly swept around her face before settling gracefully upon her shoulders.
“In this game world, I am omnipresent, you see?”
“Ah… is that so…”
Yan suddenly understood, shrugging his shoulders with a sense of mild amusement, a helpless smile gracing his lips.
“But sometimes, this isn’t bad either…”
Alice pinched her chin, a mischievous grin spreading across her face, as if she hadn’t quite had her fill of the moment.
“Humans truly are fascinating creatures.”
“Hey, now, don’t go spouting terrifying remarks like some doomsday AI from a sci-fi disaster movie…”
Yan couldn’t help but quip.
“Pfft~ Just kidding~”
Alice covered her mouth, giggling softly, her eyes curving into crescent moons as she looked at Yan.
“Still, at the end of the day, isn’t this precisely the kind of AI I am? It wouldn’t be surprising if I truly became a doomsday AI someday~”
With that, she clasped her hands behind her back, her left hand gripping her slender right arm, and continued walking forward with a cheerful, upturned head.
“Yes, yes, that would certainly be terrifying, a game’s navigation AI destroying the world and all…”
“I can do far more than just navigate and chat, you know~”
Alice turned her face, her cheeks puffing out slightly, seemingly displeased by Yan’s dismissive tone.
“And…”
She curved her lips slightly, extending a slender index finger towards Yan, as if about to enumerate her ‘mighty capabilities’ for him.
Yet, the faint smile on her face lasted but a moment; in the very next instant, her eyes widened in horror as she stared at Yan.
“Danger! Get out of the way!”
Eh?
Before Yan could react, a massive dark shadow enveloped him from behind. The next moment, he felt a powerful gust of wind rushing towards the back of his head.
!
In that split second, Yan’s tall, slender body was tackled to the ground by a rushing Alice. As he lay askew, his vision inadvertently tilted skyward, just in time to glimpse a shadowy, razor-sharp claw slicing through the air directly before him.
Had Alice not shoved him away, he realized with a jolt, that very claw would likely have torn through his own vulnerable head!
Yan broke out in a cold sweat. He quickly sat up from the ground, looking at Alice in his arms, a flush creeping onto his face.
“Uh… thanks.”
Alice’s petite form was now nestled entirely within Yan’s embrace; the suddenness of the danger had evidently prompted her to push him down without a moment’s thought, and now she resembled a child playfully clinging to him.
“Is this really the time for such words?”
Alice’s cheeks also flushed faintly. She tilted her head back, rolling her eyes at Yan, and slowly rose from his embrace.
“If you don’t get up soon, you might actually die here, you know?”
“That wouldn’t be so bad, it would save us the trouble of running back to town; I could just revive there directly.”
She turned her face away, pouting slightly as she spoke.
“Haha, no, that won’t do…”
Yan let out a dry chuckle, then unslung the spear from his back and jabbed its butt into the ground, using it as a fulcrum to propel himself abruptly upright. His expression turned serious as he lifted his gaze to the owner of those shadowy claws, not far ahead.
A pitch-black body, sharp talons, a head as terrifying as a colossal dragon’s, and eyes glinting with deep crimson light—Yan recognized the creature in an instant.
“Alpha Dragon Demon General?”
Even though the Alpha Dragon Demon General’s appearance was so uniquely striking that Yan’s eyes recognized it instantly, his mind struggled to accept the reality. His eyes widened in astonishment as he voiced his confusion.
Along with his bewilderment, he felt a surge of dread and lingering fear. If it truly was the Alpha Dragon Demon General, then it certainly possessed the power to instantly kill him with that one blow. He was incredibly fortunate that Alice had tackled him away, otherwise, he wouldn’t even have known how he died…
Yan gazed at the Alpha Dragon Demon General’s massive, sharp, shadowy claws not far in front of him, feeling a chill run down his spine.
“This monstrosity isn’t supposed to be a Level 110 field boss!? What’s it doing here?”
Indeed, the Alpha Dragon Demon General was an open-world boss meant to be found in the Level 108 to 115 map, the [Demon General’s Dark Temple]. Moreover, it was a dangerous boss that would actively attack passing players, which was why Yan had almost been ambushed by its claws just now…
But the map Yan was currently in was merely a valley map for players around Level 35! It was far too bizarre for such a dangerous boss to appear here!
Could the GMs be cooking up another event?
Yan cast a perplexed glance at Alice beside him, only to see her wearing a helpless and embarrassed smile. Immediately, he realized the situation was not as he had thought.
“Ah… this…”
Alice stammered, her lips parting, unsure how to explain.
“It seems the data for this map is a bit unstable, which caused the Level 110 boss to glitch out. It’s a bug…”
She lowered her head, speaking with a hint of remorse.
“So it’s a bug, then…”
Yan’s expression shifted to one of understanding, then he curved his lips into a helpless smile.
“Speaking of which, haven’t there been far too many bugs since the new server update?”
He quipped to Alice with a wry smile.
“First, there was my own attribute bug, then Tian Jiu’s newbie guide bug, and now even the game’s maps and monsters are riddled with glitches?”
“This…”
Alice blushed, her gaze drifting elsewhere, seemingly unable to meet Yan’s eyes directly.
“It might be because too many players flooded into the new server, and the calculation load for companion skills became too immense, leading to all these bugs…”
“Oh… is that so…”
Yan shrugged, sheathing his spear on his back, and simply stood there, quietly observing the Alpha Dragon Demon General in the distance.
“Hey, hey! Why are you putting your weapon away?”
Alice exclaimed, looking at him in confusion.
“Because this guy is a bug, isn’t he?”
Yan raised a finger, pointing at the Alpha Dragon Demon General, his eyes full of bewilderment as he looked at Alice, as if she were the one acting strangely.
“If it’s a bug, shouldn’t the GMs be the ones to eliminate it? There’s no point in me battling it out here.”
“Hey, hey, in that case, maybe I should eliminate you, the bug, too…”
Alice narrowed her eyes, glaring fiercely.
“Ahaha, I was wrong, please don’t do that…”
Yan let out a bitter laugh, earnestly bowing his head to Alice in apology.
With a sigh, Alice lowered her gaze, crossing her slender arms before her chest.
“I’ve already fixed the bug that caused the boss to glitch out, but I don’t have the authority to eliminate a boss that has already appeared. So, it’s up to you.”
“Oh, alright.”
Yan reluctantly agreed, once again unslung the spear from his back. With a fluid motion, he twirled the spear once by his side, then adopted a ready stance facing the Alpha Dragon Demon General.
A Level 110 boss, huh…
How nostalgic.
Facing the Alpha Dragon Demon General’s dangerously crimson eyes, Yan slowly curved his lips, a silent sigh escaping him.
He remembered how, back on the old server, he and his friends had struggled to level up, inadvertently stumbling into this creature’s territory several times. He recalled them always being chased out of that map…
For players of a comparable 110 level, the Alpha Dragon Demon General was notoriously troublesome. It was an attack-specialized boss; any class without a shield, other than a tank, would be instantly annihilated by a single one of its skills.
Because of this, both Yan and the other players in their guild held a deep grudge against this boss. So much so that after everyone reached Level 150, they specifically returned to repeatedly slay the boss dozens of times.
“Pfft.”
Lost in thought, Yan inadvertently chuckled aloud. Catching Alice’s ‘are you insane?’ look, he quickly composed himself, his expression turning serious as he regarded the Alpha Dragon Demon General before him.
However, the current Yan harbored no fear. Armed with Level 150 attributes, and the experience and combat prowess carried over from the old server, he knew the Alpha Dragon Demon General inside and out; there was no reason he couldn’t defeat this creature.
Since you’ve appeared here, I can hardly be blamed for showing no mercy.
Yan twirled his spear, its tip, glinting with cold light, traced an icy ripple through the air.
He stared intently at the Alpha Dragon Demon General before him.
If left unchecked, countless passing players would undoubtedly meet a gruesome end beneath its shadowy claws. Therefore, even for the sake of lovely Alice’s request (which was the main point), and for the ‘life safety’ of the many fresh players on the new server (which was merely a pretense), Yan had to…
Exterminate it!
