The sight of Theron’s departing back seemed light.
That was Selene’s impression as she watched him leave the ducal estate.
‘Is it because the misunderstanding has been cleared up?’
She had been inwardly worried that Theron might pick a fight or cause trouble with Logan, and that the two of them would not be able to clear up the misunderstanding and their relationship would become even more strained.
Although Logan was just a friend, he had a peculiar side, and Theron, likewise, had a peculiar side.
When peculiar people meet, a fight is bound to happen.
Still, since Theron had approached Logan first, saying he would call him by his first name, the atmosphere today might have been peaceful.
Selene acknowledged Theron’s effort.
Thus, she, too, felt a sense of relief, similar to Theron.
“I don’t like it…”
However, Logan, who had been staring at the place where Theron had left, muttering with a frown, looked unusually angry.
‘Why didn’t he leave with Theron?’
Logan had sent Theron off first and was still staying in the drawing-room, holding her back.
“What on earth do you like about a guy like that?”
Then he asked a question that was close to being angry.
Selene pointed it out calmly.
“You’ve asked that question before.”
‘And I answered that I didn’t know.’
“It’s because I don’t understand it even more after talking to him in person. I know his face is quite handsome, but his impression is like a gangster from a back alley.”
“Where?”
“When he smiles. It’s a mocking smile. Besides, his muscles are excessive, as if he developed them through manual labor. His suit doesn’t fall neatly at all.”
Selene could not understand any of Logan’s assessments.
Theron had an objectively handsome face, and his impression was not at all like a gangster.
His sparkling blond hair and blue eyes suited the imperial court rather than a back alley.
In particular, his smile could be said to be Theron’s most valuable accessory.
Considering that nothing made his face look as handsome as his smile.
Among those sharp words, what was most unconvincing was Logan’s assessment that his muscles were excessive.
Theron Cox’s broad shoulders and moderately developed arms and chest muscles had a beauty that no male statue could match.
Of course, when Theron Cox would occasionally use profanity or rough words or act slyly, he would look a little thuggish, but since it wasn’t often, it didn’t matter.
And he hadn’t acted that way in front of Logan.
“Besides, I can feel that he’s a completely different person from us.”
Logan’s eyes, which had been looking far away, narrowed slightly.
“A different person…?”
“People who struggle to live.”
Logan turned his head and looked at Selene.
“No matter how much you say you don’t care about such things, different is different. From the trivial matter of not knowing the brand of teacups that nobles have been using for a long time, to the major matter of having lived a completely different life.”
“…”
“It might be fine for now, but as time goes on, that gap will gradually feel larger. And an inferiority complex will lead to fights.”
It was not something Selene had not thought about.
Theron was a person who was different from her in every way, even without considering his birth.
Theron, too, knew that, so he had once tried to hide his violent father and his mother in the hospital.
Although Theron had said he would now be honest without hiding anything, she still did not know his life well.
‘As Logan said, a conflict might arise from this difference someday.’
But that was a problem that she and Theron had to overcome.
“I’ve heard that Theron Cox is a capable businessman. But you know that means he has to work for most of his life, right? It also means he has no time to spare for other things. Whether it’s a lover or a family, it can’t be helped.”
“Don’t talk like that.”
As Selene pointed it out, Logan’s eyebrow twitched.
“What do you mean, ‘like that’?”
“People who struggle to live. You’re looking down on Theron.”
Selene knew that Logan was originally that kind of person.
Although they had been close since they were young and had grown up in a similar environment, Logan, as the eldest son of the grand ducal family, had a much heavier burden than her.
So, he naturally distinguished between people who were of the same kind and those who were not.
“I’m not looking down on him, I’m just stating the facts.”
“You don’t know Theron.”
“I know roughly. What kind of day businessmen in the financial district have. I’m their client.”
Logan tilted his head crookedly.
Selene did not particularly like this side of Logan.
The side of him acting like an adult while being childish.
“Logan, you’re steeped in elitism.”
Selene warned Logan coldly for the first time in a long time.
“The way you’re talking doesn’t look dignified at all. And it’s the kind of thing grandmother hates the most.”
Although her grandmother valued dignity more than anyone, she had said time and again that elitism was vulgar and low-class.
That it was fine to enjoy what one had, but that one would be punished for looking down on others for it.
Even though Selene was glaring at him, Logan just chuckled and stuck his hands in his pants pockets.
“I don’t know when stating reality became considered elitism. I’m not talking about class, I’m talking about money.”
“…”
“It’s important to everyone these days. Making money. I was just saying that Theron Cox has to work much harder than us to do that.”
Logan asked Selene.
“Be honest. Haven’t you ever felt a gap with that man because of money, Selene?”
This time, Selene could not immediately refute him.
Even without having to search her memory in detail, the reason Theron had approached her from the beginning was money.
As there was no answer from Selene, Logan bent down and brought his face close.
“Listen carefully, Selene. I’m a much more realistic person than you. Even things like love are only possible when the levels are somewhat matched.”
“…”
“You’re obsessed with the piano, so you might value things like emotions and romance, but that’s how the world is, Selene.”
However, the more persuasive Logan’s words became, the more a sense of defiance grew in Selene for some reason.
Whether it was because Logan was looking down on Theron, or because she wanted to prove that his arrogant words were wrong.
Although she didn’t know the reason, she didn’t want to nod her head right away.
“Shut up, Logan. You’re not always right. And what you know is not the whole world.”
“Your mouth is rough. Did you learn that from Theron Cox too?”
“I’ve always been like this. Because I realized there were many pathetic men while I was studying abroad in Velora.”
Come to think of it, she felt that her old friend Logan might also be of the same kind as them.
Not the same kind as a horny man, but in the sense of judging someone without knowing them.
Logan wiped his forehead with a tired face.
“Evelyn said you drove away all the nearby men with your sharp tongue during your study abroad days. I guess it was true.”
“Is that important right now?”
“Hmph, Selene.”
Logan, who had let out a deep breath, lifted his gaze.
“This is not something we need to fight about.”
“Apologize for talking about Theron carelessly.”
“Do you really want that?”
Selene nodded firmly.
Logan, while frowning as if reluctant, finally opened his closed mouth.
“Alright… I’m sorry.”
“For talking about him without knowing him well.”
“As you said, I talked about Theron Cox without knowing him well.”
Only then did Selene’s expression relax.
Logan, who saw that, had a dumbfounded face.
“But you know your relationship with Theron Cox is really strange, right?”
Selene looked at Logan as if to ask what he meant.
“You’re not officially dating, and you’re just in the stage of watching him, yet you’re both being so overly dramatic.”
‘Was I?’
Selene just thought she had corrected what was wrong.
“Well, it seems you’re going through a transitional period, but I hope you’ll make a wise choice.”
Logan said listlessly, taking a cigar from his breast pocket.
‘A wise choice.’
As he said, she was probably going through a transitional period in her relationship with Theron.
Without knowing where this end would lead.
But one thing was for sure: Selene wanted to get to know Theron a little more.
Not just the superficial Theron, but the real Theron.
Things like what he liked, where he grew up, and what he usually thought.
Because only then would she be able to refute Logan’s nagging by saying she knew Theron well, and also make the wise choice that Logan had mentioned.
Selene had set a new goal.
